🎬 Youth Movie Review

🧾 Introduction
Youth” marks the directorial debut of Ken Karunas, diving into the familiar territory of high school romance, friendships, and teenage chaos. Set in the 2014–16 timeline, the film tries to recreate nostalgic school memories—but ends up feeling like a remix of already overused templates.

📖 Storyline

The story follows Praveen, a carefree student entering 12th standard who believes love is more important than academics. What follows is a series of crushes, heartbreaks, fights, and emotional family moments.

From one girl to another—Preshika, Sonal, and Kanagavalli—the film keeps rotating romantic angles without depth. Each relationship feels interchangeable, making the narrative repetitive rather than engaging. The second half shifts toward family drama after a school incident escalates things emotionally.

🎭 Performance Highlights

  • Ken Karunas plays to his strengths with a confident screen presence, though the character feels self-indulgent at times.
  • Suraj Venjaramoodu adds subtle humor and stands out with his dry performance.
  • The group of friends share decent chemistry, bringing some genuine fun moments.
  • The female leads do what they can, but are restricted by underwritten, template roles.

🎧 Technical Brilliance
Music (G.V. Prakash Kumar): Feels recycled, resembling his previous works rather than offering freshness.

Cinematography: Flat and generic, lacking visual identity.

Editing: Could have been tighter—film overstays its welcome by at least 20 minutes.

🎬 Direction and Production

Ken Karunas, as a debut director, plays it extremely safe. Instead of bringing a fresh perspective, he leans heavily on clichés—love triangles, school fights, strict parents, and emotional breakdowns.

However, he manages to keep the film watchable, which is no small feat given how easily this genre can go wrong.

➕ Plus

  • சில comedy scenes நல்லா work ஆகுது
  • Friends gang chemistry enjoyable
  • Suraj Venjaramoodu subtle performance
  • Watchable first half moments

➖ Minus

  • முழுக்க முழுக்க clichés தான்
  • Repetitive love tracks (same pattern again & again)
  • Weak character writing (especially female roles)
  • Flat visuals & predictable music
  • Length அதிகம் – unnecessary stretch

🧠 Final Thoughts

“Youth” is not a bad film—but it’s not a memorable one either. It feels like a “cover version of a cover version” of multiple school love stories we’ve already seen.

While it stays mildly entertaining in parts, it lacks originality and emotional impact. A tighter screenplay and fresher ideas could have made a huge difference.

🎤 Open Mic Suresh Rating

⭐⭐⭐☆☆ (2.75 / 5)

Overall Verdict:
👉 Time pass watch for youngsters
👉 But don’t expect anything new or impactful
