Introduction
Paruthi is a rural social drama that attempts to address sensitive themes like mother–son separation, caste discrimination, and emotional trauma. With a strong intention at its core, the film aims to blend social commentary with emotional storytelling rooted in village life.
Storyline
Sonia Agarwal plays a widowed agricultural labourer living alone outside her village, carrying a painful past. Dilips, a boy raised by his grandmother without ever knowing his parents, grows up facing caste-based discrimination at a young age. His only comfort comes from the affection of his schoolmate Varshita.
As Dilips struggles mentally due to social oppression, a shocking truth emerges—that Sonia Agarwal is his mother. Why does she live away from her son? Can Dilips overcome the psychological scars caused by caste inequality? Paruthi unfolds by answering these emotionally driven questions.
Performance Highlights
Sonia Agarwal’s transformation into a rural agricultural labourer is visually convincing, though her character lacks moments that allow her performance to truly shine.
Young actor Dilips, who carries the emotional weight of the story, puts in a sincere effort. His expressive acting and emotional commitment stand out in several scenes, even if consistency is an issue.
Supporting performances by Varshita, Suganya, and Kutty Puli Saravanan feel natural and grounded, contributing effectively to the film’s rural realism.
Technical Brilliance
Music by Ranjith Vasudevan is one of the film’s strongest pillars. Both songs and background score enhance the emotional tone and remain memorable.
Cinematographer Rajesh beautifully captures village landscapes and everyday rural life, lending authenticity and visual comfort to the narrative.
Editing by R.K. Selvam maintains flow but could have offered better clarity and coherence in conveying the film’s core ideas.
Direction and Production
Writer-director A. Guru deserves appreciation for choosing a socially relevant theme and attempting to portray caste discrimination without dilution. His intent to emotionally explore a mother–son relationship alongside social injustice is evident. However, the execution falls short, as the narrative struggles to communicate its ideas effectively on screen.
Production values are modest yet appropriate for the film’s grounded setting.
