A strong core idea with a relevant message — but execution wavers.

📌 Storyline

Kathirvelan (Kaushik) falls for Cristina (Prathiba) at a temple festival. To be close to her, he gives up his plans of going abroad and joins her college. She doesn’t reject him, nor does she fully accept his feelings.

A separate couple in their college elopes for a register marriage due to caste issues. For signing as witnesses, Kathirvelan and Cristina provide their Aadhaar and ration cards.
Later, Cristina’s family arranges her engagement with a Christian groom. A shocking twist emerges — the priest in their family finds a marriage certificate showing Cristina and Kathirvelan as a married couple.

Due to corrupt officials registering marriages for money without the bride and groom present, the witness documents were misused. To cancel this, Cristina frequently visits the registrar’s office in secret, leading to suspicion from her fiancé’s family.
Cristina’s family strongly opposes her marrying a man from another faith, especially after her sister’s tragic past.

Does Cristina marry the chosen groom? Or does her love with Kathirvelan succeed? And at what cost?

🎭 Performance Highlights

Prathiba (Cristina) – Brilliantly portrays a girl torn between family pressure, fear, and personal emotions. Subtle yet powerful.

Kaushik (Kathirvelan) – Delivers a heartfelt and believable performance.

Singam Puli & Kanja Karuppu – Add mild humour and support.

Director Alex Pandiyan appears in a small, humorous role as an unethical lawyer.

🎼 Technical Brilliance

Background Score – N.R. Raghunandan
Outstanding. Elevates the emotional depth, tension and mood of the film.

Cinematography – Brath Muniyasamy
Night sequences and mystery-filled frames stand out beautifully.

🎬 Direction & Production

A very strong plot, but weak narrative flow.
Director Alex Pandiyan chooses a socially relevant and important theme.
However, the screenplay suffers due to poor linkage between scenes, forced intensity, and an uneven second half.

✅ Plus

Bold subject: Marriage registration scam & women’s vulnerability

Strong emotional moments

Excellent BGM and night cinematography

Well-written female lead character

❌ Minus

Screenplay feels disjointed in many portions

Second half turns unnecessarily violent and over-dramatic

Promising script loses focus after a point

Supporting roles lack depth

🏁 Final Thoughts

Cristina Kathirvelan has its heart in the right place.
It conveys a powerful message about the misuse of marriage registration and how it affects women’s lives. With better screenplay treatment, this could have been a memorable film. Still, the message lands — and that itself is a win.

⭐ Rating: 3 / 5

Cristina Kathirvelan Review Does this cross-religion love story rise above heartbreak and barriers? 🟣 Introduction Cross-religion love isn’t new to Tamil cinema, but Cristina Kathirvelan attempts to blend it with themes of marriage registration scams, family trauma, emotional conflict, and social judgment.
