🕯️ Story & Atmosphere

Granny is a Tamil horror thriller that smartly blends mystery, emotion, and atmospheric dread. Set in a remote village, the film opens with a mysterious death that slowly unravels a long-buried dark secret. Running parallel is the story of a young techie couple who return to their ancestral home—unaware that the house is protected (or haunted) by an eerie presence.

The narrative truly takes shape with the entry of Occhai, an unsettling old woman portrayed brilliantly by Vadivukkarasi. Her past hides a terrifying truth, and her presence alone fills the screen with unease.

👻 Screenplay & Horror Elements

The film’s biggest strength is its slow-burn, fear-inducing narrative. Instead of relying on loud jump scares, the screenplay allows tension to build organically. The suspense creeps in scene by scene, making the horror feel grounded and effective. The real-time ancestral house location adds authenticity, while the lighting and set design create striking, moody visuals that elevate the scare factor.

🎭 Performances

Vadivukkarasi delivers a commanding, standout performance—her expressions, body language, and silence often speak louder than words. The prosthetics and makeup deserve special applause for transforming her into a genuinely frightening figure.
The supporting cast, including Ananthu Nag, Dhileepan, and Singampuli, offer solid, balanced performances that complement the core story without overpowering it.

⚖️ Positives & Minor Drawbacks

Plus Points:

  • Strong atmospheric horror
  • Powerful central performance
  • Well-written, layered character of Occhai
  • Effective production design and visuals

Minus Points:

  • Slightly slow pacing in parts
  • Camera lingers a bit longer than necessary in a few scenes

🎯 Final Verdict

Despite minor pacing issues, Granny (also known as Occhai) succeeds as an engaging Tamil horror film with strong performances and an immersive atmosphere. It respects the genre by focusing on mood, mystery, and character-driven fear. For fans of Tamil horror cinema, this is a satisfying and worthwhile watch.
