🎬 ‘Naangal’ – Movie Review

Plot Summary:
‘Naangal’ is a heartwarming family drama that explores the emotional bond between a strict father and his three young sons, set against the backdrop of a personal financial crisis. When the parents separate, the children live with their stern father. As he struggles with failure, the children are forced to grow up too soon. The film gently unravels how they cope with both school life and life’s deeper lessons—and whether the father transforms through understanding their emotions.

Performances:
Abdul Rafe delivers a standout performance as the complex father—stern on the outside but deeply broken within. His emotional breakdowns, resilience, and eventual sacrifice for his children make him a layered and memorable character.
The three child actors—Mithun, Rithik Mohan, and Nithin D—excel in expressing subtle emotions. Without overacting, they capture the fear, sadness, and rare joy of their characters with finesse.
Prarthana Srikanth as the mother, Sab John Edathattil as the grandfather, and the lovable dog Roxy offer limited screen time but leave a strong emotional impact.

Music & Cinematography:
Ved Shanker Sugavanam’s background score and songs are a huge asset to the film. The music beautifully complements the mood of the scenes and strengthens the emotional depth.
The cinematography by director Avinash Prakash captures not just the beauty of Ooty, but more importantly, the inner worlds of the characters—reminiscent of Balu Mahendra’s visual storytelling.

Direction & Production:
Avinash Prakash has worn multiple hats as writer, director, cinematographer, and editor. His storytelling focuses on emotions over spectacle, and while the pacing may feel slow at times, the emotional payoff is worth it. The subtle editing adds to the film’s realism and artistic flavor.

Plus:

  • Strong performances, especially by Abdul Rafe and the child actors
  • Emotional storytelling with relatable family themes
  • Soothing music and naturalistic visuals

Minus:

  • Slow pacing in parts
  • Ending feels slightly ambiguous, leaving viewers wanting clearer closure

Verdict:
‘Naangal’ is an emotionally charged film that speaks deeply to parents and families who value emotional bonds over material success. Though not a commercial entertainer, it succeeds in connecting with audiences who appreciate heartfelt storytelling.

⭐ Rating: 3.5/5 (Positive Emotional Drama)
