‘Kingston’ Movie Review 🌊🔥

A bold attempt at fantasy horror, ‘Kingston’ brings an intriguing premise but struggles to keep the thrills afloat. ⚓👻

Plot Summary:

Set in a coastal village in Thoothukudi, the film follows Kingston (GV Prakash Kumar), a young man caught between smuggling and saving his community. With a mysterious force lurking in the sea, the villagers have lost their fishing livelihood for over 40 years. Determined to uncover the truth and reclaim their future, Kingston embarks on a dangerous mission into the haunted waters. Will he survive, or will he become another victim of the cursed sea?

Performances:

  • GV Prakash Kumar delivers a sincere performance, capturing the struggles of a fisherman-turned-hero.
  • Divya Bharathi makes a charming presence, though her role feels underutilized.
  • Azhagam Perumal, Chethan, Kumaravel, Sabumon Abdusamad, and Antony bring solid support to the narrative.

Music and Cinematography:

  • GV Prakash’s music adds intensity, though the background score at times overpowers the scenes.
  • Cinematographer Gokul Binoy captures the eerie sea visuals well, though green screen effects could have been more refined.

Direction and Production:

  • Director Kamal Prakash brings an ambitious fantasy-horror concept, blending folklore with modern storytelling.
  • The production design and visual effects try to create a grand cinematic experience but fall short in execution.

Plus:

✅ Unique concept blending fantasy, horror, and action
✅ Engaging moments in the second half
✅ Strong performances by supporting actors

Minus:

❌ Weak CGI and green screen effects reduce the impact
❌ Inconsistent screenplay with some predictable moments
❌ Background score could have been more balanced

Verdict:

‘Kingston’ is an ambitious fantasy-thriller that attempts to bring a fresh story to Tamil cinema. While the core idea is intriguing, the execution falls short of expectations. Fans of GV Prakash might enjoy his performance, but a tighter screenplay and better visuals could have elevated the film further.

⭐ Rating: 3/5
